SharePoint Online is an attractive cloud-based service by Microsoft Technology Associate helping the organizations in managing content, knowledge as well as applications for the purpose of empowering teamwork, finding information in a fast manner and seamlessly collaborating across the organization.
While Sharepoint on-premise is a SaaS-based SharePoint solution file management tool that has been designed to perfectly fit for collaboration between employees of a single organization regardless of their location or time of availability.
Both of these technologies are extremely beneficial to organizations. But many times, these technologies are often confused with each other. Also, these technologies are confused with Microsoft Azure cloud services Thus to clear the image of these two, there are a few points that should be looked upon. These are:
1. Requirements of resources
It explains the list of resources needed to perform a particular task. In this case, when SharePoint Online and SharePoint on-premise are compared, it can be seen that one more room is required to run SharePoint 2016 On-Premises along with an IT team to maintain the server. This IT team also working on adding several updates and patches to it. Thus, it results in more requirements of hardware as well as the software. But on the other hand, as far as SharePoint online is considered, the need for internal resources is less. There is no need to have extra hardware attached to the system. This enables the IT team to work with a single focus and thus, yielding maximum productivity.
2. Address of the information
In business, the address of data, that is, where the whole corporate information lies, is extraordinarily beneficial. There are so many crucial pieces of information in it, thus it needs to be stored in a very secure but accessible place. SharePoint Online is not so preferred when it comes to data storage. Many companies do not find it a reliable source for storage. So, in this case, SharePoint On-premises is a more preferred one. Various organizations store there data in it and retrieve it in case of need.
3. Updates and infrastructure
In the case of SharePoint On-Premises all updates, as well as patches made, are developed and maintained by the IT team of that particular organization. But on the other hand, in the case of SharePoint Online, all updates and infrastructure are maintained by Microsoft itself, that too, automatically.
The size and number of packages were decreased at a considerable rate in SharePoint online. In this way, it can be concluded that Microsoft technology associate is aware of the requirements of companies. It also takes care of the regular happenings around the world so that the organizations should be updated in a similar way. Thus, when updates and infrastructure as concerned SharePoint Online can be preferred as better because of its high technological advancement.
4. Cost
An important point that comes to the mind of people when they are thinking about setting up Sharepoint is the Cost. There is a question that arises in everyone’s mind and that is, “how much will it cost”? So for the answer, they will have to look at their requirements and then they will have to look at the two SharePoint solutions, On-premise and Online.
The on-premise Sharepoint there will be a purchase of it, upkeep of hardware and there will the cost of the license and some other things too. Share point online is a part of an Office 365 plan and it is billed every month to its user.
5. Collaboration with mobile phones
SharePoint Online can be enabled in touch-enabled interfaces for various mobile devices. This makes it more and more relevant for the workers who have to work while traveling or from home. It contributes towards the seamless collaboration of documents with reliable as well as durable links.
The links which are shared between users can be opened, modified and much more. Also, it enables us to change the location as well as the name of the file which is moved. SharePoint on the Premises does not give such advantages. In order to work on mobile devices, it has to be transferred with the help of some cable, Bluetooth or email. It is a tedious job to do as compared to SharePoint Online. Another solution is Microsoft Azure Cloud services that are used for the same purpose.
6. Internal Capabilities
The on-premise solutions are more preferred and dependent on the companies internal capabilities. The on-premise solution offers them more direct control over their information and the standards for compliance, this is in opposition to the information being held up security standards that are industry-specific, or be verified by the third parties. Sharepoint online directly relies on Microsoft’s in-built redundancy for data centers.
7. The difference from the point of view for developers
- For Developers: Sharepoint is a tool that is dynamic and is increasing itself. The tool has to be up to date, it should always be up to the demands of the enterprises all around the world. There can be three strategies in which how companies wanted to configure and run Sharepoint can be divided into:
- Traditional Approach (On-premise)
- Sharepoint Online (Moving to the cloud)
- Hybrid (On-premise and Online)
- Trust Level
Now, it is easy to create a customized solution with the arrival of the add-in (previously app) model than when what was in full trust. Customization is a straight forward process for On-premise, Cloud, or hybrid Sharepoint. Full trust solutions will still be supported in Sharepoint fully but it is not recommended as a strategy because these will not be of any use on the cloud in migrations in the future.
Sharepoint development services have been used by different enterprises around the world and both on-premise and online types are used. The differences between both of them have been stated above. There is one more type that is the hybrid type and it might be a bit expensive but it is the best as there won’t be any problems related to Sharepoint Solutions in the future. Sharepoint consulting companies make sure that the enterprise understands its own requirements well before they install Sharepoint, either on-premise or the online version of it.
